[Chabad.org] The Parshah in a Nutshell, Parshah Va'etchanan - 10th/11th of Av 5769 ; July 31, 2009

The Parshah in a Nutshell
Va'etchanan

Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11

Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G-d to allow him to enter the land of Israel, but G-d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.

Continuing his "review of the Torah," Moses describes the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah, declaring them unprecedented events in human history. "Has there ever occurred this great thing, or has the likes of it ever been heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of G-d speaking out of the midst of the fire... and live? ... You were shown, to know, that the L-rd is G-d... there is none else beside Him."

Moses predicts that, in future generations, the people will turn away from G-d, worship idols, and be exiled from their land and scattered amongst the nations; but from there they will seek G-d, and return to obey His commandments.

Our Parshah also includes a repetition of the Ten Commandments, and the verses of the Shema which declare the fundamentals of the Jewish faith: the unity of G-d ("Hear O Israel: the L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is one"); the mitzvot to love G-d, study His Torah, and bind "these words" as tefillin on our arms and heads, and inscribe them in the mezuzot affixed on the doorposts of our homes.

Parshas Vaeschanan

Double Sin, Double Comfort

They sinned doubly, as it says, “Yerushalayim has sinned a sin.” And they were stricken doubly, as it says, “She has received double for her sins.” And she will be comforted doubly, as it says, “Be comforted, be comforted, my people” (Yalkut Eichah 1118).
This Midrash can be understood in light of the comments of Ibn Ezra and Sforno on the concluding verses of our sedrah: “When your son will ask you in the future — What are the testimonies and statues and judgments, which Hashem our G-d has commanded you? — and you shall tell your son we were slaves unto Pharaoh in Egypt, and Hashem took us out of Egypt with a strong hand...and Hashem commanded us to do all these statutes for our good all the days, to give us life as this day” (Devarim 6:20-24).

Ibn Ezra explains that the son’s question is not what the mitzvos are, but why we were given a yoke different than all other peoples. The Torah’s answer is that we must have trust that the mitzvos are for our own good because G-d saved us from slavery by taking us out of Egypt. Sforno elaborates that while the benefit of the mitzvos is predominantly in the World to Come, they also bring us life in this world.

Hashem introduces Himself at the beginning of the Ten Commandments as the G-d Who took us out of Egypt, and not as the G-d Who created heaven and earth. This reminds us that just as the redemption from Egypt was for our benefit, so too, the mitzvos are for our good, and not for G-d’s sake. Though, as Chazal say, mitzvos were not given to us to enjoy, but rather as a yoke around our necks, the purpose of that yoke is, in the final analysis, our good.

The Haggadah attributes the Torah’s question here to the wise son. The answer given to him in the Haggadah is that we do not eat after the Korban Pesach is all that is in our mouths at the moment of redemption. In the end, it is the benefit from mitzvos, such as eating the Korban Pesach, that remains with us.

The Torah begins with Hashem’s loving kindness — His clothing Adam and Chavah — and ends with His loving kindness — burying Moshe. The entire foundation of Torah is chesed — G-d’s total giving to those who serve Him. The Torah is, in its entirety, an expression of G-d’s desire to do good for us. It is not an imposition on our life but rather a framework within to earn eternal reward for our own good.

Delving deeper, Torah begins with the kindness of covering man’s humiliation, his physical body. It gives us the means to utilize that body in G-d’s service and thereby purify and elevate it. Moshe was the culmination of this process of elevation to being G-d-like. He transformed his physical body into something so holy that only Hashem could bury it and put it away until the resurrection of the dead. That is the very essence of Torah — to remove the shame of pure physicality by elevating the physical to G-dliness.

When one sins, he actually commits a double crime: the first is rebellion against G-d’ the second against himself in his disregard of the benefit from the mitzvah. Hence the punishment is also double. Not only does Hashem punish him for his rebellion, just as a parent punishes a child to discipline him and guide him back to the right path. He also robs himself of the great benefit Hashem so much desired to bestow upon him.

Consequently the comfort will also be double. The ultimate benefit will finally be realized, and, in addition, we will understand that the punishment itself was for our own good to prevent us from losing our eternal reward.

Consolation prizes

While mourning is something that we seem to understand intuitively, such
is not the case with consolation. Even as our experience tells us that
we do get consoled after the loss of a loved one, it leaves us with a
sense of intellectual ambivalence. The concept of consolation seems
somewhat shallow.

Shabbath Nahamu: True happiness in the future

by Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
(Links to the audio appear after the text)

It says in the Haphtarah of Shabbath Nahamu: "Hareemee Bakkowah Qolekh..." (raise your voice powerfully...Behold, here is your G-d).

Nowadays, if we announce good news, since we are concerned about 'Ayin Hara' (the Evil Eye), we say it quietly without making too much fuss. In the future, when we announce the Geullah (Redemption), we will say it loudly since 'Ayin Hara' will have been eliminated and we will no longer have to fear it.

Today, everybody has numerous worries, and concerns. If a person has financial difficulties, or some health problems, and someone comes with good news, even though he will be happy, he will nevertheless continue to be troubled by his financial straits, or health concerns.

So what kind of good tidings can we announce that will truly comfort a person? It must be something that will take care of all our problems. And that is what we are promised in the future: "Behold, here is your G-d". Because once He comes to dwell amongst us, automatically all worries and hardship will be removed. May it come soon.

Netilath Yadayim after Tisha'ah BeAb

by Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
(Links to the audio appear after the text)

On Tish'a BeAb (the 9th of Ab) we are only permitted to do Netilath Yadayim (the ritual washing of hands) up to the knuckles and not till the wrists as we do ordinarily. Therefore, at night, when Tish'ah BeAb is over, there are those who wash their hands properly up to the wrists. Even though this is not required, it is a good custom and one the Ben Ish Hai says that he did.

It also says in Ben Ish Hai that after Tish'ah BeAb is over, we should recite the Birkath Hallebanah (blessing on the moon) . it should be recited with joy and we should say "Dawid Melekh Yisrael Hai Weqayyam" with a pleasant voice and an uplifted heart.

(See Ben Ish Hai, Shanah Aleph, Parashath Debarim, Oth Kaf Heth)

NEW SERIES!

"Building Your Self-Image and the self-image of others"

This series can change your life. And the life of your spouse, your
children, your friends and your employees.

Every success story begins with a positive attitude. This series will
show you how you can maintain a winning state of mind --- and how you
can instill a sense of confidence in those around you. And that is sure
to improve your life; physically, emotionally and spiritually.

For decades, Rabbi Zelig Pliskin has been motivating people to believe
in themselves and to realize their potential. As a counselor, he has
transformed the lives of hundreds; through his books and lectures, he
has motivated and inspired many thousands. Rabbi Pliskin explains the
emotional dynamics of success. He shares insights and stories. Most
importantly, he gives us practical tips on how to believe in ourselves
--- and how we can get others to believe in themselves. From recognizing
our abilities and appreciating our talents to coping with setbacks and
and dealing with failures, this series has it all.

THE NEW COLONIALISM

Foreign Investors Snap Up African Farmland

Governments and investment funds are buying up farmland in Africa and Asia to grow food -- a profitable business, with a growing global population and rapidly rising prices. The high-stakes game of real-life Monopoly is leading to a modern colonialism to which many poor countries submit out of necessity.

SCHUMACHER'S F1 COMEBACK

An Adrenaline Junkie Returns to the Racetrack

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher made the surprise announcement this week that he will fill in for injured Ferrari driver, Felipe Massa. If things work out, it will be a great sports comeback. But even Germans are wondering whether their beloved "Schumi" is too old -- and inexperienced with the today's cars -- to win.

MOURNING NEDA

Iranian Martyr's Mother Wants Justice

When Neda Agha Soltan was killed on June 20, the world watched in horror. Now a symbol of Iran's reform movement, the memorial to mark the 40 days since her death has seen clashes between mourners and security forces. Her mother told SPIEGEL ONLINE that she just wants to find the culprit.

SWINE FLU WARNING

Ministry Warns Heavy Metal Fans Not To Kiss or Share Beer

You can easily catch a cold in a crowd. So imagine what you might get, living cheek to jowl with 75,000 heavy metal fans for three days. Officials in one German state know this and have issued a swine flu warning to those heading for the biggest heavy metal festival in the world this week.

PROVOCATIVE PROTESTS

Students Fight Prostitution in Ukraine

Experts say that there are 12,000 prostitutes in Ukraine, many of whom are students trying to make ends meet in difficult times. One group has found creative -- and sometimes abrasive -- ways to let foreign tourists know that "Ukraine is no whorehouse."

OPINION

Germany Should Face Up to Reality of Civil War in Afghanistan

German politicians like to refer to the army's deployment in Afghanistan as a glorified police mission. But the fact of the matter is that Germany is participating in a civil war in Afghanistan -- and a few nice words to the contrary won't change that.

A WORRYING TREND

Air Safety Plunges in First Half of 2009

Passenger flights have grown safer each decade since the Wright Brothers first flew more than a century ago. But the number of dead in crashes during the first half of 2009 threatens to disrupt this trend. Experts say the number of smaller accidents appears to be increasing.

FEELING THE DOWNTURN

Recession Hits Southern Germany Hardest

Engineering, car manufacturing and chemical synthesis -- three of southern Germany's biggest industries are also three of the areas worst affected in the current recession. A new study shows that Munich is the only southern town to dodge the downturn.

THE WORLD FROM BERLIN

'The Strangest Candidacy in Postwar Germany'

Social Democratic Party candidate Frank-Walter Steinmeier hoped to launch his election campaign with a flourish this week. Instead, his party has been consumed by negative polls and petty scandals. Prospects are not looking good for the veteran politician who would like to unseat Angela Merkel.

SPORTS BROADCASTER SCORES A GOAL

ESPN's Global Soccer Ambitions

My eldest granddaughter turned eight years old this year. I have not seen her or spoken to her in more than six months, and wonder what new achievements and milestones she has attained... I have a picture on my refrigerator of her and her younger brother smiling into the camera, which I look at each day... There are people who tell me to stop thinking about these two precious grandchildren.

Praying and Giving Thanks
By Rabbi Jonathan Sacks (adapted from the Koren Sacks Siddur)
Since the birth of faith, people have turned to God “who heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds” for strength and recovery in times of sickness. Many of the psalms are supreme examples of such prayers. There is a deep connection, still not fully understood by medical science, between “healing of the spirit and healing of the body.” Prayer, said the Sages, is not a substitute for medicine, but neither is medicine a substitute for prayer...

The final meal before Tish'ah BeAb

by Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe
(Links to the audio appear after the text)

The final meal before the fast of Tish'ah BeAb (Se'uddah Mafseqeth) cannot be eaten sitting on regular chairs or even cushions, but should be eaten sitting on a mat or plank that is less than a Tefah high (about four inches). This assumes, of course, that the person is physically able to do so. According to the Qabbalah, one should not sit directly on the floor.

When three or more men sit together to eat a meal with bread (which requires Birkath Hammazon), they must say Zimmun (the invitation to join in the reading of Birkath Hammazon). Zimmun, indicates a state of permanence. Since we do not want the atmosphere of mourning to be a permanent one, three males should not sit together during this meal, so that they will not become obligated to recite the Zimmun.

GLORIA Center, Barry Rubin, "Israel's Peace Plan Marks a New Era in the Country's History"

Israel's Peace Plan Marks a New Era in the Country's History

By Barry Rubin*

July 20, 2009

http://www.gloria-center.org/Gloria/2009/06/new-era.html

This could be the most important article I write this year. Israel has entered a new era of thinking and policy in which old categories of left or right, hawk or dove are irrelevant under a national unity government bringing together the two main ruling parties.

How did this new paradigm arise?

Between 1948 and 1992, the Israeli consensus was that the PLO and most Arab states want to destroy Israel. When—or if--the day comes that they’re ready to negotiate seriously we’ll see what happens.

Then came the Oslo agreement and a huge shift. The governing view was that maybe the Palestinians and Arab states learned the cost of their intransigence enough to make peace possible. The left thought a deal could bring real peace; the right thought it was a trick leading to another stage of conflict on terms less favorable to Israel. But both expected a deal to materialize.

The year 2000, the Camp David failure, the Syrian and Palestinian rejection of generous offers, and Second Intifada destroyed illusions in Israel.

Since then, Israel has groped for a new paradigm. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon offered unilateralism; Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni constantly offered more in exchange for nothing. But the more they did so, the more international abuse Israel received.

Now a new approach has finally emerged capable of reversing this situation. It goes like this: Israel wants peace but doesn’t hesitate to express not only what it wants and needs but also what’s required to create a stable and better situation. To ensure that violence and instability really ceases requires:

--Recognition of Israel as a Jewish state. Without this step, the aftermath of any “peace” agreement would be additional decades of Arab effort to destroy Israel in all but—temporarily—name.

--Absolute clarity that a peace agreement ends the conflict and all claims on Israel. Otherwise, the Palestinian leadership and much of the Arab world would regard any “peace” agreement as a license for a new stage of battle using Palestine as a base for renewed attacks and demands.

--Strong security arrangements and serious international guarantees for them. Have no doubt; these will be tested by cross-border attacks from Palestine.

--An unmilitarized Palestinian state (a better description than “demilitarized”), with the large security forces they already have: enough for internal security and legitimate defense but not aggression.

--Palestinian refugees resettled in Palestine. The demand for a “Right of Return” is just a rationale for wiping Israel off the map through internal subversion and civil war.

If Israel gets what it requires—and what successful peace requires—it will accept a two-state solution, a Palestinian Arab Muslim state (the Palestinian Authority’s own definition) alongside a Jewish state, living in peace.

Part of the new thinking is to understand that precise borders and east Jerusalem’s status, while important, are secondary to these basic issues. If those principles are resolved, all else can follow.

This new posture is not one of desperately asserting Israel’s yearning for peace but rather saying: We’re serious, we’re ready, we’re not suckers but we’re not unreasonable either. We want peace on real terms, not just more unilateral concessions and higher risk without reward. Not experimenting with our survival to please others. Not some illusory celebration of a two-state solution for a week and then watching it produce another century of violence.

Is it really such a brilliant idea to rush into giving a state without serious conditions to a Palestinian regime which has failed to govern competently what it already has, daily broadcasts incitement to murder Israelis, is profoundly corrupt, has already lost half its patrimony to a rival whose goal is a new genocide but whose own most fervent wish is to merge with that rival, and whose program is merely for the world to pressure Israel into handing it everything?

The best outcome would be if this program was met by Palestinian cooperation. If they are suffering so under alleged occupation, if so desperate for their own state, there’s nothing in this offer they can’t accept.

If, however, they prefer rejectionism, exposing their claims as false, that, too, is acceptable. The truth would be known: the Palestinians and much of the Arab world can’t make peace with Israel because they don’t want peace with Israel. And that is because they don’t want Israel to exist. Period.

Around this program, Jews outside Israel should rally, putting aside old conflicts about who’s more passionate about peace, who more concerned about security. The same applies to other countries and those well-intended who want to see a strategic situation more in accord with both their interests and humanitarian considerations.

In this context, there is no more puerile and misleading notion than that Israel’s government has put forth a program encompassing a two-state solution because of U.S. demands or pressures. This is a plan that organically grew out of the country’s situation, experience, and a broad national consensus.

A second notion Israel’s new paradigm rejects is the argument that either Israel is so strong that it can give without receiving or so weak that it must do so. The country simply does not desperately need a deeply flawed "solution" to be grabbed either out of misplaced "generosity" or "fear."

Another mistaken conception is that the status quo is intolerable and that any change would be for the better. More risks, concessions, and the establishment of an unstable and hostile Palestinian state--the most likely outcome at present--would make things worse.

Equally wrong is the notion that time is against Israel, a strong and vibrant society surrounded by weak, disorganized neighbors. Israel’s strategic situation has dramatically improved over the decades. It is a strong, confident society visibly meeting the challenge of the modern economic and technical environment.

Finally, and of the greatest importance, is the fact that Israel’s new policy is truly based on a consensus. It merges both the conservative approach--proper suspicions and demands for security and reciprocity—and the liberal approach--a proper readiness to compromise and desire for true peace--into one package.

Both elements are now blended in the thinking of the overwhelming majority of Israelis. A new national consensus has emerged which will be strong, and durable. If the world pays attention to it, there might actually be some real hope for peace.

But as long as Western governments and media are only interested in two things--what the Palestinians demand and new concessions from Israel--the situation will remain frozen for many years to come.
