Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir Tam (1100?-1171) was one of the primary Tosafists - who expounded on the Talmud in addition to his grandfather Rashi. His death was precipitated by the terrible persecutions that Jews were suffering at that time.

5000 [1240] - Debate Over the Talmud Begins in France
At the court of Louis IX of France, the fate of many confiscated volumes of the Talmud is to be decided by a public debate between Rabbi Yechiel of Paris and a Jewish apostate.

5046 [1286] - Rabbi Meir of Rothenburg Imprisoned
"Maharam", as he was also known - was the leader of the Jewish community in Germany. He was imprisoned in fortress Ensisheim - and held for ransom. The Maharam refused to have the Jewish community pay for his release, and eventually passed away in prison 7 years later.

Many Jewish communities destroyed on this date during the First Crusade and during the Chmelnicki massacres of 1648.

5002 [1242] - 24 Wagonloads of Talmud Burned in Paris
These irreplacable handwritten manuscripts of the Talmud, were burned after being confiscated 3 years earlier - on the order of the pope. This was despite the forced debate that began in their defense 2 years before.

5528 [June 20, 1768] - Haidamaks Kill Jews in Uman Ukraine
During the Haidamak serf uprising against the Polish nobility, after bravely fighting off their attackers - thousands of Jews in Uman, are killed. This was also a memorial fast day for the 50,000 Jews killed during this uprising.

5736 [July 4, 1976] - Hostages Rescued at Entebbe
After an Air France flight was hijacked - all except for the Jewish passengers were freed. Israeli commandos traveled over 2,500 miles to launch a surprise attack on Palestinian terrorists and Ugandan troops at the Entebbe airport. The success of the mission prompted the Lubavitcher Rebbe to call it an open miracle.

2449 [1312BCE] - Moses dispatched 12 spies to scout the Holy Land
On this day, Moses dispatched 12 spies to scout the Land of Israel. One Prince from every tribe was chosen to be sent on this mission. They were instructed to gather intelligence on the land that could be used to create tactical war measures to aid in its conquest. The spies returned 40 days later with a slanderous and disheartening report, dampening the hopes of the Jews about entering the land. The Jews were punished for listening to the spies’ report that went contrary to G-d’s promise to give them land. The entire generation of the Exodus died in the 40 years of desert sojourn (one year per day of the spies’ mission) and did not merit to enter the Holy Land. The day of the spies return (Av 9) has ever since been commemorated as a day of mourning upon which many tragic events befell the Jewish people.

5701 [June 23, 1941] - The Lubavitcher Rebbe arrived in America
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, arrived in the United States after escaping war torn Europe. After residing for some time in Nazi-occupied Paris, the Rebbe made his way to Lisbon, Portugal where he boarded the ship “SS Sorpo Pinto” with his wife Chaya Mushka. He arrived in the port of New York on this day at 10:30 A.M. Over the course of the following decades, the Rebbe would change the course of American and world Jewry, reviving the global Jewish spirit following the holocaust destruction.

All Jews were expelled from France by King Charles the Fourth without the year's warning which they had been promised.

5550 [June 9, 1790] - Purim of Florence
Jews of Florence, Italy celebrate a Purim today commemorating their salvation. They were rescued by the local bishop who quieted the mob that threatened to massacre and kill out the entire Jewish community. The celebrations are preceded by an annual communal fast day on the 26th of Sivan. This is one of the many “Local Purims” celebrated by individual communities to mark their deliverance.

3880 [120] - Assassination of Rabbi Chananya ben Tradyon
Although the Romans outlawed Torah study, this did not deter Rabbi Chananya ben Tradyon from teaching it publicly. When the Romans caught Rabbi Chananya, they wrapped his body in a Torah scroll and burned him alive. While the flames engulfed him his disciples asked him “Master, what do you see?” Rabbi Chananya replied “I see a scroll burning, but the letters are flying up to heaven.” Rabbi Chananya was one of the Ten Martyrs mentioned in the Yom Kippur prayer “Eileh Ezkerah.” (See yesterday for more on the Ten Martyrs.)

3828 [68] - First of the Ten Martyrs were assassinated
The Roman Emperor sentences leading Jewish sages to death as “retribution” for the sale of Joseph by his brothers, the sons of Jacob. Reportedly, the Emperor called upon the sages and asked them how Jewish law penalized one who kidnaps and sells to slavery. When they replied that he is liable to death, the Emperor instructed that these ten sages be killed. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel and the High Priest, Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha, disputed over which one would die first and be spared the pain of witnessing the other’s death. The Emperor instructed that lots be cast, when the name of Rabban Shimon was chosen, he was immediately beheaded. The Emperor’s daughter was attracted to Rabbi Yishmael’s appearance and requested that his skin remain intact so that she could later stuff it for preservation. His skin was flayed and when they reached his forehead (the place of Tefillin), he cried to G-d as his soul perspired. Another sage, Rabbi Chanina S’gan Hakohanim, was also killed on this day, the rest of the sages were killed several years later.

5751 [June 10, 1991] - Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Yisrael Zev Gustman
Today marks the passing of Rabbi Israel Zev Gustman (1908-1991), a Talmudic giant of modern times. When Rabbi Gustman’s Talmudic brilliance reached the Jewish high court in Vilna, Lithuania, he betrothed the daughter of one of the court’s esteemed judges. With the passing of his future father-in-law, Rabbi Gustman was appointed to sit as a Judge on this high court (of Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzensky). He established a Lubavitch Yeshiva in Vilna. Although Rabbi Gustman was physically beaten by the Nazis, he succeeded in escaping to America, where he became the Rosh Yeshiva of the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. He subsequently immigrated to Israel where he established a yeshiva and lived out the final years of his life.

In March of 1846, a delegation of Hungarian Jews offered to pay the royal treasury some 1,200,000 gulden over five years to abolish the heavy residence tax that was posed upon Hungarian Jews. On this day of that year, King Ferdinand the Fifth abrogated the tax forever, committing to a fairer and less discriminatory attitude towards the Jews.

Miriam (sister to Moses and Aaron) was afflicted with biblical ailment of tzaraat (a form of leprosy). This came as a punishment for talking negatively about her younger brother Moses. She was quarantined outside of the Israelite encampment in the desert of seven days. During this time, Moses prayed for her recovery and the entire Jewish nation waited for her return before advancing in journey towards the Holy Land. Tzaraat is a biblical punishment for the sin of Lashon Harah – speaking negatively of others. (Numbers 12)

3404 [357BCE] - Mordechai Sends Jews a Call for Self-Defense
Since a decree sealed with the royal seal cannot be revoked, even the decree issued by the now dead Haman - it was necessary for Mordechai to send the Jews another decree under the royal seal, allowing them to defend themselves against anyone wishing them harm. Esther 8.

After being thrown into prison, the Jewish populace of Blois was burned at the stake, because of a blood libel - a false accusation that Jews used the blood of gentiles in the Passover Matzah. Rabbi Yaakov Tam established this as a fast day. Almost 500 years later it was established as a fast day in the Polish communities, to commemorate the Chmelnicki massacres of 1648-9.

5615 [June 5, 1855] - Opening of "Jews' Hospital": The first Jewish hospital in America
On this date, the first patient was admitted to the first Jewish hospital in America, “Jews’ Hospital of New York”. Jews had previously been privileged to their own hospitals in Germany, Italy and Russia. A Jewish hospital guaranteed that Jews would never be denied medical treatment on account of their religion as had often been the case in pre-war Europe. Today, Jews’ hospital is known as the “Mount Sinai Hospital” and is located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan near Central Park.

On this day, Muslims recaptured the city of Acco from it’s Christian rule, bringing an end to Christian domination in the Holy Land (and the inauguration of centuries of Muslim dominion).

5727 [June 26, 1967] - Legalization of Jewish worship in Spain after expulsion of 1492
No, the date 1967 is not a mistake! It took 475 years from the Spanish expulsion by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492 for Jews to be again allowed the right to worship as Jews in Spain. Until this date, Jews and Protestants did not have the right to worship publicly. The new law granted permission to mark places of worship and advertise religious services.

Torrential rains of the Great Flood destroyed the earth over a period of 40 days and 40 nights. For many months the earth’s surface was completely covered with water. On this day, Noah’s ark landed on the only visible surface over the water, the peak of Mount Ararat. It was several more months before the earth completely dried and Noah was instructed to leave the ark.

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson - for trying to keep Judaism alive in Soviet Russia, was arrested by the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, shortly after midnight. Later documents showed that he was slated for execution, yet miraculously he was released almost a month later.

Agudat (Union of) Israel was established as an international organization to strengthen Torah observant (Orthodox) Judaism, and to act as united voice and politcal arm of this community. Dayan ("judge") Weiss (1902-1989), was one of the foremost Poskim (Legal Decisors) in Jewish Law of our time. He was the head of one of the most prominent rabbinical Courts in Jerusalem, after holding similar positions in Manchester England, and pre WWII Romania. He was the author of Minchas Yitzchok, a multi-volume compilation of responsa on Jewish Law.

5664 [May 24, 1904] - Yahrtzeit of the Jewish "King of Russian Tea"
Today marks the passing of Klonimus Wolf Wissotzky. Although he was born to poor parents, Wissotzky amassed for himself great wealth after establishing The Wissotzky Tea Company in 1849. He "made it big" after winning a contract to supply tea for the entire Russian military. In his will, he bequeathed a large fortune to charity. After his death, the Wissotzky family opened a small tea factory in Israel (then Palestine), but after the communists seized all their Russian assets, it proved to be almost all that remained. To this day, Wissotzky is still Israel’s largest tea company.

4907 [1147] - Rabbi Yaakov Tam Escapes Crusader Mob
One of the leading early commentators on the Talmud, known as Rabbeinu Tam, escapes a French mob of the 2nd Crusade, who almost killed him in Ramerupt, France. After breaking in to his home the day before - during the holiday of Shavuot - looting his home and tearing his Sefer Torah, Rabbeinu Tam was taken prisoner before miraculously escaping.

5594 [June 15, 1834] - Jewish Community of Safed Attacked by Arabs
Many Jews were killed or wounded, in addition to Torah scrolls and synagogues being burned down, when surrounding villages attack the Jewish community of Tezfat (Safed).

5350 [June 11, 1590] - Seventy Six Jews Die in a Fire in Posen Poland
Wooden structures primarily made up the Jewish quarter in Posen (Poznan), making it susceptible to fire. In addition to the loss of life, 80 Torah scrolls were burned. The Jewish quarter was abandoned for the next two years.

5699 [May 27, 1939] - Passing of R. Yaakov Sofer Author of the Kaf Hachaim
Rabbi Yaakov Chaim Sofer (1870-1939) was born in Baghdad, and studied under the Ben Ish Chai - Rabbeinu Yosef Chaim. Rabbi Yaakov was one of the outstanding sages of Sephardic Jewry, and was the author of the eight volume Kaf Hachaim - a seminal work on Jewish Law - which incoroporates the Shulchan Aruch (code of Jewish Law) and its commentaries, and drawing on Kabbalah as well.

Rabbi Chayim, and Rabbi Yehoshua a Rosh Yeshivah (Head of Academy), were accused of trying to convince an apostate to return to the Jewish Faith. The Reitzes brothers were arrested 7 weeks earlier on Passover eve. They were tortured and eventually burned in Lvov (Lemberg).

Almost a decade earlier, government troops demolish a Jewish colony on the outskirts of Warsaw - causing many Jews to settle in Warsaw proper. The Marshal now orders the Jewish community expelled from Warsaw.

Batyah, Pharaoh's daughter, discovers Moses while bathing in the Nile. She takes him home to the palace, and names him Moshe - which means drawn - "For I drew him from the water". Exodus 2.

2448 [1313BCE] - G-d Gives the Torah to the Jewish People From Mt. Sinai
G-d descends on Mt. Sinai, amongst thunder and lightning, fire and smoke, to give the Jewish People the Torah. The first two commandments (I Am G-d and You Shall Have No Other G-ds) are heard by the entire people, whereas the other 8 are communicated via Moses. On the morrow Moses will return to Mt. Sinai receive the rest of the Law. Exodus 19 - 20.

4856 [1096] - Jews Choose Death in Cologne Germany
Rather than be baptized, a number of Jews choose martyrdom, as did many Jews during the massacres the First Crusade inflicted on Jewish communities across Europe.

5520 [May 21, 1760] - Passing of The Baal Shem Tov
Rabbi Yisrael Ben Eliezer (1698-1760), known as the Baal Shem Tov (Master of the Good Name), rejuvenated the Jewish People after the physical and spiritual devastation caused by the terrible Chmielnicki massacres of 1648, and the false messiah Shabbetai Tzvi in 1665. He founded the Chassidic movement, which teaches that anyone can attain closeness to G-d, thru prayer, and joy in doing Mitzvot - Divine commandments. A year later, he was succeeded by his student Rabbi Dov Ber of Mezritch.

King David (907 BCE-837 BCE) was secretly anointed by Samuel as king, when King Saul failed to fulfill G-d's directive. G-d appointed the Davidic line for all time to be kings in Israel, including the final redeemer - the Messiah . David was descended from Ruth on his mother's side, and Judah, Jacob's son, on his father's. Jerusalem (also known as the "City of David") was established as the capitol of Israel by King David. He was the author of the Book of Psalms. David was succeeded
by King Solomon.

5509 [May 24, 1749] - Valentin Potocki - Avraham ben Avraham - Burned at the Stake
Known as The Ger Tzedek (Righteous Convert) of Vilna, he was the son of Count Potocki, one of the richest landowners in Poland. Years after converting secretly in Amsterdam, he returned to Ilya, a suburb of Vilna, where he was eventually recognized. After the church imprisons and tortures him, he is publicly burned at the stake, when he refuses to renounce Judaism.
