OU KOSHER RELEASES TWO NEW DVD’S

ON THE KASHRUT OF MEAT AND BIRDS

As part of its ever-expanding initiatives in kashrut education, OU Kosher has released two DVD’s -- on meat and birds -- explaining the intricacies of what makes these products kosher. They follow two highly popular DVD presentations, “Kosher Kidz,” which conveys the basics of kosher certification to a youthful audience; and “The Kosher Fish Primer,” which explains the basics of identifying kosher fish and purchasing it.

Kosher Meat: Unexplored Frontiers with Rabbi Yisroel Belsky

You want to really understand meat preparation -- the Torah way. What is it that goes into making a kosher steak or lamb chop? But you don’t know who can teach you. You’d probably need a team of three: A rabbi with mastery of the relevant laws; a scientist with a breadth of anatomical knowledge; and a veteran shochet (ritual slaughterer) who can share his expertise.

In “Kosher Birds: Who Are They?” a unique video seminar, Rabbi Chaim Loike, an OU Kosher rabbinic coordinator possessing special expertise in birds, explains how we determine that a bird is kosher. Using live birds -- squawks and all! -- Rabbi Loike addresses such questions as: What are the physical traits of kosher birds? How does Judaism define a predatory bird? What role does communal tradition play here? Let Rabbi Loike be your guide, and understand kashrut in a whole new way.

Kosher Meat and Kosher Birds comprise the two most recent examples of OU Kosher’s expanded educational outreach. Russia gets a pass

The Georgia Hypocrisy

So let’s see if we have this straight.

The entire world is horrified at Russian behavior. The Russians invent a new ‘nation’ in need of self-determination, all as a ploy to break up Georgia. The Russians scream about the mistreatment of the Ossetians and never mind human rights abuses inside Russia, especially in Chechnya. The Russians coordinate moves by separatists inside Georgia to serve as justification for their own invasion. The Russians preach human rights and self-determination as a ploy to engage in aggression. Hmmm, where have we heard that before?

The story brings to mind immediately two historic parallels. The first is the campaign by Nazi Germany on behalf of ’self-determination’ for the Sudeten Germans inside Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. Germany also invented a ‘people’ in need of self-determination inside the small state it had designs on, invented claims of human rights abuses, and then used the separatist activities of the Sudetens as an excuse to invade and demolish in stages Czechoslovakia. Never mind that human rights were respected a zillion times better inside Czechoslovakia than inside Nazi Germany. Never mind that ethnic Germans already had
their own sovereign countries they could migrate to if they were unhappy in the Sudeten areas of Czechoslovakia.

The other historic parallel concerns the invention of a ‘Palestinian people.’ The Arabs use the ‘Palestinian’ separatist movement the exact same way that Russia uses the Ossetian separatists. The Arabs and their apologists invent tales of ‘human rights abuses’ by Israel of ‘Palestinians’ much like Russia invents stories about Georgian mistreatment of Ossetians. Never mind that the human rights of Arabs inside Israel are respected infinitely better than are those of Arabs inside Arab countries, and the non-Arabs inside Arab countries are treated even worse. The world whines about Israeli ‘apartheid,’ whereas in reality Israel is the only Middle East regime that is NOT an apartheid regime.

In fact, the Georgians did sometimes mistreat the Ossetians and the Ossetians have a far stronger case for self-determination than the ‘Palestinians. The Ossetians speak their own language unrelated to that of their neighbors and have their own culture. In comparison, the ‘Palestinians’ are less different culturally and less distinct linguistically from the Arabs in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria (whence most of them migrated into ‘Palestine’ in the late 19th and early 20th century) than Californians are from other Americans.

If the world is horrified at Russian aggression and behavior towards Georgians, why are so many of these same people not horrified at Arab aggression towards Israel and behavior identical to that of Russia? Why are those who pooh-pooh the claims of a right to self-determination by Ossetians not dismissing as a similar Sudeten-style ploy the demands for ‘Palestinian self-determination?’ Why are Palestinians, who enjoy treatment far better than that of the Ossetians and the Chechens, the focus of countless media exposes about their imaginary mistreatment by Israel?

And where are all those solidarity protesters? How come the same ‘International Solidarity Movement’ protesters who like to attack Israeli troops and police and to serve as ‘human shields’ to protect the po’ Palestinian ‘victims’ of Israeli self-defense not rushing to Ossetia and Georgia to stand up to the Russian troops, throwing rocks at them and singing Kun-Ba-Ya? Where are the leftist human shield blocking Russian (and Georgian) military vehicles the same way they block Israeli
Defense Forces operations? Are they afraid they will not be served the same nice gourmet lattes they get when Israeli forces apprehend them for hooliganism in the West Bank?

Why are the leftists not organizing ships to break the Russian blockade of the Georgia coast the same way they are trying to provide sea-borne aid to the Hamas in Gaza? Where are the Rachel Corries and why are they not challenging Russian bulldozer crews? Why are the Anarchists against the Wall not hopping planes to Tbilisi to challenge Russian construction crews erecting walls in Abkhazia and Ossetia? Why are the Israeli leftist professors not holding pro-Ossetian poetry readings and solidarity rallies in Tbilisi?

Leftist hypocrisy seems to have no limits!

Ami Isseroff in Georgia on my Mind points out the obvious
What is left is an observation about what is missing following the Russian invasion of Georgia. A super-power invaded a tiny state on a very slim pretext. Georgia, after all, did not encroach on Russian sovereignty or threaten the existence of Russia in any way. Russians admit that South Ossetia is Georgian territory.

In their brutal invasion, the Russians committed numerous war crimes, killed civilians indiscriminately, dropped cluster bombs on civilian targets, all to combat a country which had done them no harm. Yet the UN and the large human rights organizations have been more or less silent about these atrocities. The media are not full of op-eds by so-called “liberals” calling for the dismemberment of Russia because the state was founded based on a mistake. Nobody is branding Russia as a chronic violator of human rights. The question of proportionality is hardly even raised. This silence is in marked contrast to the hysterical condemnations of Israel that accompanied and followed the Second Lebanon War. What is more interesting, is that many of the same folks who led the bandwagon against Israel in 2006, are now busy finding every possible excuse to “justify” the Russian barbarity.

Lox, whitefish, and gefilte aren't the only major Yiddish fish. The animated hit, "Finding Nemo," is swimming in Jewish waters! Jewish actor, Brad Garrett, is the voice of Bloat (who else?), while Albert Brooks plays the nervous (what else?) Marlin, who overcomes his fears (of course) to find his captured son Nemo. The title role belonged to then nine-year-old Alexander Gould. The Jewish California native is a second generation show biz vet as his mom was a child actress. Both Alexander and his two sisters have followed suit. The young man told the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent that he "guessed Nemo was Jewish."Oh ... and he doesn't eat fish! Can you blame him?

JEWS OUT OF THIS WORLD! ...

Rabbis, rabbis, everywhere -- yes even on the moon. Or at least there are Jewish craters on the moon named for rabbis. One, "Rabbi Levi," was no doubt dubbed so to honor the 14th century Rabbi Levi ben Gershom known for his important contributions in mathematics, astronomy, and navigation. But crater-Levi is not a lone Moon Jew! Another crater was also named for a Jewish sage, 12th century Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra. The Spanish scholar was known for his astrological explanations for Scriptural passages. Now, all we need do is figure out how to fix a mezuzah to the entrance of these craters. Hmmm. Better call my friend Hadassah who works at NASA.

A JEW, WHO NU? ...

Who among us hasn't known, heard of, or read about someone raised gentile, later learning they were actually "one of the tribe"? Most famous, perhaps, is former Secretary of State Madeline Albright who was said to have learned she was Jewish in 1997. As a writer, I've researched many such "revelations" -- from Conversos who were often told the truth on their bubbes' deathbed, to an entire village with oddly unquestioned Jewish traditions (Venhaver, Portugal). So imagine my surprise when John Stossel, anchor of ABC's "20/20," specials, and author of books exposing myths and lies, told me a life story which just may have contributed to his passion for the truth. Stossel didn't know he was Jewish until he was a teen! Raised in the Congregational Church, he said, "One day I made a remark about a Jewish boy picking his nose - and my brother said 'what the heck do you thing you are?'" Although his mother claimed she told him of their heritage, he doesn't recall hearing this information. He embraced Judaism at about age 30. His wife is Jewish, and his brother-in-law is a Jewish activist. The Stossel family even observes the Sabbath! Whew! Another "myth" uncovered. Hey John, got a job for me over at 20/20? John??

RELATIVITY THEORIES? ...

Most of us know (and tell our children) that Albert Einstein was no prize in school and was backward in speech and in math. Naturally, Albert, born in Ulm Donnau, Germany in 1879, worried his parents, Hermann and Pauline. The Einstein family pow-wowed and pondered the reason. And so, the interest in Albert's head began - first to explain his deficiencies, then later, to explain his genius. Little Al's grandmother thought her grandson's head was much too fat, while Mama Pauline, worried that her child's head was lopsided. "Alright, OK, so he'll take violin lessons," must have run through her head when she insisted her child, the nebekhl, study the instrument. When Einstein died, his brain was removed without permission and in contravention of Jewish law by Dr. Thomas Harvey in 1955. Einstein, one of the greatest minds of the 20th century and creator of the Theory of Relativity, was found to have a brain that looked much like any other -- gray, crinkly, and, if anything, a trifle smaller than average.

IS THIS A JOB FOR A JEWISH GIRL? ...

With the Olympics in full swing, I'm reminded of a conversation I had with Melanie Strug, mother of gold medalist, Kerri Strug. In 1996, the tiny 17-year-old Jewish athlete became a hero. At the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the only way the United States' Women's Gymnastics team could win their first-ever gold medal, depended upon Kerri's final vault. In her first vault, she fell, tearing ligaments, and spraining her left ankle. Barely able to walk, Kerri readied ... then nailed an almost perfect landing, and the gold for the Team. For most moms, this would be enough, no? But to Jewish mom Melanie, "School was most important. I thought you can't make a career out of gymnastics." And she made sure her daughter was prepared. "When she moved away from home [Arizona] to study gymnastics in Houston (with famed coach Bela Karoly],at age 13, we were devastated. Before we made the decision to let her go, we went to Houston to check this out." Mrs. Strug wasn't thrilled. "A lot of the kids let school slide. School was always number one with us. Gymnastics was not going to be her future." Mom's planning paid off. In addition to Olympic Gold, Kerri holds a B.A. in Communications and a Masters Degree from Stanford. When I spoke with Kerri, she was with the Justice department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The lesson? Gold may tarnish, but learning lasts a lifetime. Now, that's what I call a "Golden Rule!"

Time is Running Out — August 19, 2008

In less than two weeks the month of Elul begins. Every morning, at the end of our prayers, we sound the Shofar to remind ourselves that the Day of Judgment is nearly upon us. It is time for introspection in order to prepare ourselves for the Days of Awe that are coming very soon.

It would seem that the times in which we are living require that we redouble our efforts to please our Creator. Our world has never been in greater peril than it is today. Our leaders here in Israel are turning loose murderers by the hundreds and we are no closer to seeing Gilad Shalit released. Shimon Peres has no trouble pardoning Arab murderers, yet he refuses to pardon Jewish prisoners who had the audacity to shoot back when attacked by Arab terrorists. Prime Minister Olmert has a new Friday afternoon tradition of being questioned by the police, even as he is busily making plans to give away more of the Jewish homeland to terrorists.

Even if we get new elections, there is no one to vote for. All the candidates are cut from the same cloth. Not one recognizes the sanctity of the state. It is from such leaders that terror is born.

And while Jews in the United States may smugly point to the above facts, among many others, as good reason not to leave America and come home to Israel, in a very short time they will realize the mistake they are making. I am convinced that after the upcoming elections in the USA, that country will become an Obamanation. I do not believe in American democracy. I believe that Obama has been chosen already, in spite of the alleged elections. His handlers have already formulated a plan to change the USA to meet their needs. As has always been the case in the past, it will be the Jew who is first to be sacrificed. All the ills of the world will be blamed upon us and the day will come when Jews living in the USA will be lucky if they can leave alive, never mind with their possessions.

As we listen to the warning cries of the Shofar during the month of Elul, let us understand that, just as Abraham could not understand why G-d required him to sacrifice his only son, we too cannot understand why He would command us to leave the good life in the USA to live in an Israel with self-destructive leaders. It is not for us to understand why. It is just for us to know that this is His Will for His People.

Stop reading the newspapers and go back to the Bible. The entire world is depending upon us to simply be good Jews and come home.

Aliyah Under Fire: Young Girl Immigrates from War-Torn Georgia

The State of Israel was the only nation that evacuated all of its citizens from the war zone in Georgia, and the planes from Tbilisi also brought the Jewish state dozens of new immigrants.

One of the new immigrants, Maya Gogyashvili, described the situation to IsraelNationalNews: "Lots of bombs, they are throwing lots of bombs. Bombing Gori and around Gori, the villages... It's a very bad situation. Lots of people are killed and died. Soldiers. I'm very sad, you know, when I am thinking about soldiers I always want to cry."

Maya's parents made arrangements for her and her sister to board the plane to Israel but stayed behind and are now in Tbilisi. She now is making plans to study Hebrew.

"In Gori there were lots of Jewish families, maybe 200 people, maybe more," Gogyashvili estimated. "Every Friday my father was going to synagogue ...
